There are many ups and downs involved with pregnancy. Many women find the symptoms of cravings and mood swings easy to control. But what can you do to deal with them when they seem to be getting out of control?
Mood Swings
As with cravings, mood swings occur throughout a pregnancy due to the rapidly changing levels of hormones. Mood swings may even be related to the food cravings! A major trigger for mood swings in pregnant women is stress. Keep your life as stress-free as possible during your pregnancy. Using a calendar pregnancy tool will help you keep track of your mood swings better. Mood swings can often result from a feeling of being overwhelmed. Be as organized and you can. Talk to your partner, family, and friends to enlist their help and support.
Cravings
Cravings refer to a pregnant woman’s desire to consume a particular food. Cravings will usually persist until the woman gets the food. Food cravings during pregnancy are typically caused by the great amount of hormonal changes experienced by the woman. These changes in turn have an impact on how the woman tastes and smells, thus producing food cravings. Generally, a woman should not be alarmed by bizarre food cravings, as they are a normal part of pregnancy. However, if a pregnant woman starts to crave things like dirt or chalk, then she could be experiencing something known as “pica.” This happens when a woman’s iron levels are extremely low. If this happens, see your doctor.
Cravings and mood swings are a normal part of pregnancy. If you have any concerns, don’t hesitate to talk to your doctor.
